National Organizations

Advocates for Youth

Advocates for Youth creates programs and promotes policies to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. The organization provides information, training, and advocacy to youth-serving organizations, policy-makers, and the media in the United States and around the world. Advocates for Youth has created a Youth of Color Initiative, a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth Initiative, and a Condom Availability Clearinghouse. Advocates for Youth has created a wide variety of fact sheets, videos, and other resources regarding HIV/AIDS-prevention issues and adolescents. Information on these programs is available on the organization’s Web site.

AIDS Action Council

AIDS Action Council is dedicated to responsible federal policy for improved care and services, medical research, and effective prevention. The organization convened National Organizations Responding to AIDS (NORA), a Washington consortium of 175 national advocacy organizations concerned about AIDS. AIDS Action Council also runs The Pedro Zamora Center, a national AIDS youth advocacy program. The Web site provides extensive information about AIDS policy including fact sheets, issue briefs, and policy papers.

American Association for Health Education (AAHE)

AAHE provides technical assistance to legislative and professional bodies to promote policies that support effective health education programs. AAHE’s AIDS Project seeks to strengthen teacher preparation in school health education, including HIV/AIDS-prevention education for elementary, middle school, and special education teachers. The Web site provides a full description of this project as well as publications and resources for professionals.

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE)

AACTE is comprised of colleges and universities dedicated to preparing professional educators. AACTE's project Building a Future Without AIDS helps teacher educators improve their knowledge about HIV/AIDS so they can provide information to education students.  The project makes available curriculum, materials, and methods appropriate for the teacher education.  The Web site includes resource guides .

American Association of Community Colleges (AACC)

AACC is a membership organization that supports colleges through education, advocacy, research, policy, and coordination. AACC’s Bridges to Healthy Communities project aims to build a community college infrastructure that supports education and information programs to prevent HIV infection and other serious health problems in students. The Web site provides information on this project, a bibliography of HIV resources, and research briefs.

American Psychological Association (APA)

APA’s Office of AIDS has developed a variety of programs related to HIV/AIDS-prevention and mental health services. The APA has established a national network of experts who offer free and ongoing technical assistance to community-based organizations and health departments looking for effective prevention programs. The Web site includes information on research, activities, major issues, mental health providers, as well as education and teaching resources on HIV/AIDS.

American Social Health Association (ASHA)

ASHA focuses on sexually transmitted disease (STD) education and patient advocacy. ASHA publishes a variety of educational materials, provides direct patient support through the Herpes Resource Center/National Herpes Hotline and the HPV Support Program, and strives to raise public awareness of the disproportionate impact that STDs have on women. ASHA administers the CDC National AIDS Hotline, the CDC National STD Hotline, the National Herpes Hotline, and the Herpes Resource Center. ASHA’s Web site includes information on HIV and other STDs, a sexual health glossary, and links to a local support groups for people living with Herpes or HPV.

Association of Maternal and Child Health (AMCHP)

AMCHP’s Adolescent and School Health Project assists state Title V programs with the utilization of surveillance data, the integration of coordinated school health programs, and the creation of communication forums that foster state-to-state information sharing. The Web site provides information designed to strengthen the capacity of Title V programs to help schools and organizations provide HIV-prevention education.

Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO)

ASTHO is a non-profit association whose membership is comprised of the executive officers of the department of health of states, territories, and possessions of the United States. ASTHO is engaged in a wide range of legislative, educational, scientific, and programmatic issues and activities on behalf of public health. The organization serves as an information resource to state health agencies on a wide range of issues, including environmental health, public health services, immunizations, infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, public health leadership, school health, and tobacco-use control. ASTHO’s Adolescent and School Health Project assists state public health agencies in implementing coordinated school health, HIV-prevention, and other health-promotion and risk-reduction policies and programs in schools. The Web site provides information on the organization, its projects, and links to state and territorial health officials.

The Bacchus & Gamma Peer Education Network

The Bacchus & Gamma Peer Education Network is an international association of college and university-based peer education programs dedicated to alcohol abuse prevention and related student health and safety issues. Bacchus & Gamma created and sponsors Sexual Responsibility Week, an awareness campaign scheduled to coincide each year with the week of Valentine's Day. A programming manual for this campaign is available on Bacchus and Gamma’s Web site. The Web site also provides information on joining the network.

Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS)

CAPS is part of the University of California at San Francisco’s AIDS Research Institute, a campus-wide enterprise that encompasses all UCSF AIDS programs. CAPS is committed to maintaining a focus on HIV prevention using multiple disciplines as well as both an applied and a community-based perspective. CAPS conducts research on HIV prevention including AIDS risk behaviors, HIV prevention among youth, HIV and substance abuse, and policy and ethical issues. CAPS’ Web site provides information on HIV/AIDS research and model programs. CAPS has also created numerous resources including fact sheets, bibliographies, monographs, and reports. The Web site also provides extensive links to additional HIV/AIDS information as well as information in Spanish.

Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (CHEF)

CHEF supports schools and other youth organizations throughout the country with innovative curricula, training, resources, and conferences. CHEF’s Middle-Level AIDS Prevention and Comprehensive Health Project works with the National Middle School Association to offer conferences designed to help school teams improve health programs for young adolescents. CHEF also created the HIV/AIDS curricula Get Real About AIDS. The Web site includes additional information on trainings and conferences.

Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)

CCSSO is a national, non-profit organization whose members are the public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides guidance for policy concerns that affect elementary and secondary schools. CCSSO’s HIV/School Health Project assists state education agencies in providing effective HIV/AIDS education as part of a coordinated approach to school health. The project produces and disseminates materials about a coordinated approach to school health and provides state school officers with research-based materials related to HIV education, teen pregnancy, and school health. CCSSO’s Web site provides more information on the organization, its projects, and a variety of publications. The Web site also links to each state/territory’s education department Web site.

Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt

The AIDS Quilt was created and is displayed in locations across the country in an effort to make people aware of how serious the AIDS epidemic is and how many lives it has taken. The Web site provides dates and locations for viewing the AIDS Quilt as well as pictures of panels from the Quilt.

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health (previously COSSMHO)

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health focuses on the physical and mental health as well as the human service needs of the diverse Hispanic communities. The National Alliance for Hispanic Health's Stage HIV and AIDS Prevention Education Project (SHAPE) is based on the organization’s Theater As a Tool for Prevention model, which allows for a culturally competent means of disseminating prevention messages. The Web site provides more information about these two projects as well as information about The National Alliance for Hispanic Health's other projects, HIV News in Brief, and links to additional resources on the Web.

National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)

NACCHO is a non-profit membership organization serving all of the nearly 3,000 local health departments nationwide—in cities, counties, townships, and districts. NACCHO provides education, information, research, and technical assistance to local health departments and facilitates partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies in order to promote and strengthen public health. NACCHO’s HIV/AIDS project is designed to strengthen the organization’s role as an advocate for progressive HIV policy and adequate resources to sustain and enhance HIV prevention, research, and care services. NACCHO’s Web site provides information about membership, public health advocacy, and a variety of health programs run by the organization. 

National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO)

NAFEO represents the historically black colleges and universities in the United States and advocates for the need of a higher quality education system where race and socioeconomic status are not the determinants. NAFEO’s Peer Education and Training Program provides technical assistance in the development of comprehensive HIV/AIDS education programs; conducts HIV/AIDS education and training for faculty and students; distributes a quarterly technical assistance newsletter; and convenes an annual Summer Training Institute for peer educators with the American Red Cross. The Web site provides information on this and other programs sponsored by NAFEO.

National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA)

NAPWA’s mission is to enhance the lives of people with AIDS by building leadership among people with AIDS and improving health services. NAPWA creates and disseminates information about the prevention and treatment of HIV, new research gains and ongoing studies, emerging trends in the epidemic, and strategies for self-advocacy. Each year NAPWA sponsors HIV Testing Day to encourage people to know their own HIV status. The Web site provides information on the importance of becoming an advocate for people living with AIDS and contains links to national, state, and local organizations providing information or services about HIV/AIDS.

National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE)

NASBE represents state and territorial boards of education and provides trainings, conferences, and resource materials. NASBE’s Effective HIV Prevention Through Healthy Schools project works with the 13 states of the Healthy Schools Network on their policy development efforts; assists states in adopting healthy school policies; and leads a group of national education and health organizations to develop strategies to generate support for effective HIV education and comprehensive school health programs. NASBE has also established a policy exchange center on school-based HIV-prevention and school health issues. The Web site provides extensive links to education resources.

The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD)
NASTAD represents state health agency staff who administer AIDS-related health care, prevention, education, and support service programs supported by state or federal funds. NASTAD’s Web site provides information on policy and legislation, state legislature activity, and links to state AIDS programs and directors.

National Association of Students Personnel Administrators (NASPA)

NASPA provides college students and faculty with important information on policy development, advocacy, and current issues that affect students. The Health Education Leadership Program is dedicated to the prevention of HIV through comprehensive education including workshops, resources and referrals, and dissemination of HIV information. The Web site provides links to newsletters and articles on HIV/AIDS as well as to additional resources on the Web

National Center for Health Education (NCHE)

The National Center for Health Education provides advocacy, technical assistance, research, evaluation, and information exchange in health education. NCHE has developed Growing Healthy, a curriculum designed to provide school health teachers with the tools they need to effectively teach health education. This resource covers a wide range of health topics including alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, nutrition, HIV and AIDS, physical fitness, consumer health, safety and first aid, disease prevention, and many others. The Web site provides information on Comprehensive School Health Education, including answers to the following questions: “What is the role of schools today?” “What is comprehensive school health education?” “What makes a curriculum comprehensive?” "How do students benefit?" "What can you do?"

National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC)

NCCHC works to improve the health and educational conditions of confinement facilitates, such as jails, juvenile detention facilities, and prisons. NCCHC’s Comprehensive HIV Education and Prevention for Incarcerated Youth Program is an intensive two-day program designed to provide specialized training for service providers working with juveniles housed in correctional settings. The training is designed to enable professionals to implement HIV education programs suitable for group homes, training schools, boot camps, and other state or county juvenile facilities. The Web site contains additional information on this program as well as information on accreditation for correctional health care facilities and certification for correctional health care professionals.

National Education Association (NEA) - Health Information Network

The Health Information Network (HIN), an affiliate of the National Education Association, provides NEA members with information and training geared toward developing health-enhancing behaviors, reducing health risks, and promoting a safe and healthy environment. HIN has developed programs designed to help school personnel address HIV and sexual health in their roles as educators and as employees.

National Network for Youth (NNY)

The National Network for Youth is dedicated to ensuring that young people can lead safe, healthy, and productive lives. NNY’s Safe Choices project, provides HIV prevention training and technical assistance to persons and organizations that work with youth in high-risk situations. The project operates the Safe Choices Hotline (800/878-AIDS) and distributes issue briefs and fact sheets. National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC)

NMAC assists organizations that actively support communities of color impacted by HIV/AIDS through technical assistance, public policy, education, and advocacy.

National School Boards Association (NSBA)

NSBA represents school boards across the country.  NSBA’S HIV/AIDS and School Health Program provides technical assistance designed to foster school board members’ awareness of HIV/AIDS and school health issues and to motivate them to support effective and appropriate HIV/AIDS policies and programs. The program includes an HIV/AIDS and School Health Database that contains materials on policy development, confidentiality, school staff training, community support, and program evaluations, and curricula. Selections from this database as well as other related information are available online. 

National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC)

NYAC advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) youth to end discrimination and ensure their well-being. NYAC’s HIV/STD Prevention Project works to identify and make available model programs for HIV prevention, focusing on programs that provide fact-based information, exploration of values and attitudes, skills building, and access to services. In addition, NYAC provides technical assistance and training to service providers working to prevent HIV/STD infection among LGBT youth. NYAC’s online resources database has information about national and local organizations across the United States that serve LGBT youth.

Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS)

SIECUS' mission is to affirm that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life and that all people have the right to the information, skills, and services they need to make responsible sexual choices. SIECUS provides health care professionals and educators as well as parents with the most reliable information on sexuality. SIECUS’ School Health Project provides state and local education and health agencies as well as youth serving professionals with technical assistance, training, and resources on HIV prevention and sexuality education. As part of this project, SIECUS publishes SHOP Talk, a biweekly fax and electronic newsletter that focuses on HIV-prevention issues for school-age youth. SIECUS’ Mary S. Calderone Library is the largest sexuality education clearinghouse in the country open to the public for on-site and electronic research and assistance. The Library also houses the National School Health Education Clearinghouse, which provides information on programs, policies, curricula, HIV/STD prevention guidelines, and teacher training among other things.
