Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

As part of its overall public health mission, CDC provides national leadership in helping control the HIV epidemic by working with community, local, state, national, and international partners in surveillance, research, prevention, and evaluation activities. CDC works in collaboration with many other governmental and nongovernmental organizations to strengthen effective HIV-prevention efforts nationwide. CDC also provides financial and technical support for: disease surveillance; HIV antibody counseling; testing and referral services; street and community outreach; risk reduction counseling; prevention case management; public information and education; school-based education on AIDS; and international research studies.

The following offices/branches of CDC are actively involved in HIV-prevention efforts:

Business and Labor Responds to AIDS Program (BRTA/LRTA)
The CDC’s Business Responds to AIDS and Labor Responds to AIDS Programs (BRTA/LRTA) help large and small businesses and labor unions meet the challenges of HIV/AIDS in the workplace and the community. These programs work in partnership with businesses and labor unions, as well as trade associations, public health departments, AIDS service organizations, and government agencies to promote the development of comprehensive workplace HIV/AIDS programs. The Web site provides information on HIV policy developments, manager/labor leader training, employee education, education for employee’s families, and volunteerism/ community service.

The National AIDS Hotline
The National AIDS Hotline is operated by the American Social Health Association under contract with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Web site provides general information about HIV/AIDS and links to additional information and services. The hotline handles approximately one million calls per year from people with questions about prevention, risk, treatment, and other HIV/AIDS-related concerns. Information specialists are available 24 hours a day to answer questions, provide referrals, and send free publications through the mail. To reach the National AIDS Hotline by phone, call 1/800-342-AIDS (1/800-342-2437). Spanish (1/800-344-7432) and TTY (1/800-243-7889) services are also available.

National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) - Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH)
The Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) works with many national organizations as well as state and local education agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the territories to help promote coordinated school health programs. DASH funds states to strengthen HIV prevention education to prevent sexual risk behaviors that lead to HIV incidence, unintended pregnancy, and other important health problems.  DASH also funds many national organizations who are working to strengthen schools’ ability to provide quality coordinated school health programs.

The National Center for Health Statistics
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) collects a variety of HIV/AIDS-related data including HIV-related deaths from the National Vital Statistics System, use of health services from the National Health Care Surveys, and data on HIV-related knowledge and testing behaviors from the National Health Interview Survey and the periodic National Survey of Family Growth.

National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention: Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (NCHSTP-DHAP)
NCHSTP-DHAP conducts behavioral intervention, research, and evaluation as well as surveillance to monitor HIV/AIDS-related trends and risk behaviors. The resulting data provides a basis for targeting prevention resources. This agency also provides financial support and technical assistance for HIV-prevention programs conducted by state, local, and territorial health departments, national minority organizations, community-based organizations, and business, labor, and religious organizations.

The National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) - Division of AIDS, STD, and TB Laboratory Research
NCID’s Division of AIDS, STD, and TB Laboratory Research provides laboratory research and support for  CDC’s surveillance, epidemiological, and clinical activities. It also conducts studies of HIV-infected and uninfected persons with hemophilia and assists in the design, implementation, and evaluation of prevention and counseling programs for them and their families.

National Prevention Information Network
The National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) develops, identifies, and collects information on the prevention, treatment, and control of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN’s Web site is designed to offer extensive resources about all aspects of HIV/AIDS and prevention efforts. NPIN makes this information available to healthcare providers, patients, and organizations working in prevention, research, and support services. NPIN provides reference and referrals to public and private resources; offers access to online databases; and distributes publications about HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. 


National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The NIH conducts research; supports the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; trains research investigators; and fosters communication of biomedical information. The NIH is comprised of 25 separate institutes and centers.

Office of AIDS Research
The NIH Office of AIDS Research is responsible for the scientific, budget, legislative, and policy elements of NIH-AIDS research programs. This Web site provides information on both current and historical HIV/AIDS research at NIH as well as links to other HIV/AIDS related Web sites. 

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
NIAID is responsible for conducting and supporting basic research on HIV; developing new drug therapies; conducting clinical trials of promising experimental drugs for HIV infection and related opportunistic infections and cancers; and carrying out epidemiological studies to assess the impact of HIV on the populations most severely affected. NIAID’s Web site provides access to fact sheets and brochures, news releases, and the organization’s AIDS agenda


United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA): HIV and AIDS Program

The FDA’s HIV/AIDS program assists in the development of policies and regulations related to HIV/AIDS and informs the community of FDA activities and policies. The Web site provides resources such as information on clinical trials, testing information, news releases, therapies, articles and brochures related to HIV/AIDS.
