Washington, DC - State Policy Assistant

The SIECUS public policy office, located in Washington, DC, is committed to promoting comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive rights as well as fighting sexual ignorance, censorship, and discrimination based on gender, age, or sexual orientation.

About the Position:
The State Policy Assistant is part of the State Policy Team and works closely with the State Policy Coordinator and Vice President for Public Policy in building relationships and working in partnership with state partners on a variety of initiatives related to sexual and reproductive health and rights.  The position reports to the State Policy Coordinator and requires some travel within the United States.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing assistance to state and community-level partners including:  helping to craft model legislative language, grassroots advocacy, and media outreach around issues of sexual and reproductive health; and promptly replying to additional requests from state and community partners.  In addition, providing information and skill building assistance to partners through trainings and presentations. 
  • Including state and community partners in federal-level work including: working with other SIECUS staff to integrate state, community and coalition partners in advancing federal level issues through generating constituent calls and letters for select purposes and policymakers.
  • Assisting in the development of SIECUS publications, including annual SIECUS State Profiles.
  • Researching and analyzing sexuality education and abstinence-only-until-marriage funding and policies in states and communities including tracking funding, assessing content of programs, and reporting on results to national, state, and local partners.
  • Serve as a member of the DC Policy staff by: contributing to monthly Public Policy Updates for the SIECUS website and various listservs; representing SIECUS at relevant policy meetings and promoting SIECUS’ positions and policy priorities to state/local government agencies and officials, and colleague organizations; being knowledgeable and able to communicate on current federal and state policies; being able to make recommendations for SIECUS policy activities; and other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least two years experience in public policy work (preferably around reproductive and sexual health) or equivalent experience in a related area
  • Experience working within states and communities is a must
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfortable both formally and informally presenting at meetings
  • Strong writing, verbal and research skills
  • Strong interest in and commitment to advocating for sexual and reproductive health
  • Must be a team player
  • Exceptional organization skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Some travel is required

New York, NY -Internship Opportunities

SIECUS' NY office is now offering volunteer internship opportunities, both full and part time, throughout the year.

Prospective interns should be hard working, enthusiastic, and flexible individuals who seek a working knowledge of issues including sexuality education, prevention of teenage pregnancy, STD/HIV, sexual orientation, reproductive rights, and related issues. Interns can expect to work with the Information and Communication Department on a variety of projects, including researching, monitoring, and writing about current issues.  A position is also open working on international projects of the Education and Training Department.  Original written work by interns is often featured on the SIECUS website.

Students who require financial assistance may wish to contact their financial aid office or career center to determine if they qualify for applicable financial support. Housing is not provided.

Hours per week: Flexible, SIECUS hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday.
