The book specifically mentions individuals in a child’s life (e.g., family members, baby-sitters, and neighbors) who could be sex offenders and the possible use of touching “games” in order to inform and empower children to protect their bodies. Making Sense of Abstinence: Lessons for Comprehensive Sex Education

This new teaching manual contains 16 lessons plans about abstinence for adolescent audiences. The activities are designed to be respectful of teens and to address the complexity of the issue without simplistic “just say no” prescriptions. Concepts include defining abstinence for one’s self; decision-making skills around abstinence; and behaviors included and excluded in abstinence definitions. Lesson help students learn how to effectively carry out the decision to abstain and how to protect one’s health if one chooses not to abstain.

Sex Education Classroom Activity Kits

These kits package all the materials needed for supplementary activities on a variety of sexuality education topics such as correct use of condoms, HIV risk, and values and beliefs. The kits come complete with instructions and all the playing pieces to create and fun and informative lessons. The kits have been designed for an average classroom size of 30 students or smaller. They target grades 7 to 10 but can be modified for younger groups or students with special needs. Each kit also comes with discussion questions and suggestions for follow-up assignments. While these activity kits are not complete curricula or program plans, they can be successfully integrated into existing programs to fill in topical gaps or to provide fresh ways of introducing topics.

Establishing National Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education - Lessons from Nigeria

The Centre For Human Relations & Community Studies and Concordia University Occasional Programs in Professional Human Relations Practice will be sponsoring a Sexual Attitudes Reassessment (SAR), September 16 -18, 2005, at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The SAR is a process-oriented, structured group experience to promote participants' awareness of their attitudes and values related to sexuality. Shirley Walker, M.Ed, and Stephanie Mitelman, CCFE, CSE, will lead this workshop which will assist participants in understanding how these attitudes and values affect them professionally and personally. Professionals and students in the field of human relations or sexuality, including counselors, therapists, social workers, child care workers, nurses, teachers, sexuality and family life educators, are invited to participate. Registration must be made in advance and participation is limited. The fee to attend is $450 ($350 for students) and includes all materials used in the three-day workshop. Note: This is not a course for academic credit, but participants will receive a certificate of completion for professional recognition and certification.
