NATIONAL OBSERVANCES

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month , highlighting sexual violence as a major public health problem and reinforcing the need for prevention efforts. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) has developed campaign information to assist communities in planning events to promote a better understanding of the devastating impact of sexual violence on individuals and society. The 2005 campaign focuses on the importance of developing healthy, respectful relationships as a positive step in the prevention of sexual violence. For materials, contact NSVRC:

Additional information about sexual violence is available at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/svfacts.htm .

May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (NTPPM). The observance aims to remind communities to focus on pregnancy prevention and empower teens with information to become sexually responsible adults. Several organizations offer planning resources for communities participating in NTPPM:

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy highlights May 4, 2005, the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. On this day, adolescents are asked to go online and take a fun, engaging quiz designed to help teens come up with their own plans for avoiding pregnancy. The first annual National Day in 2002 had 75,000 quiz takers. In 2003, nearly 300,000 people from all fifty states took the National Day quiz. BOOKS

Antonio's Card/La Tarjeta de Antonio
Rigoberto Gonzalez
This bilingual children's book tells the story of a young boy who struggles to express his affection for his mother and her lesbian partner on Mother's Day despite the teasing of his classmates. Unlike the few other children's book about gay parenting, the main conflict of the story is not the same-gender relationship between Antonio's mother and Leslie. Instead, their relationship serves as the background and the story focuses on learning to accept other people's differences. A free curriculum guide for teachers is available from the Children's Book Press website.

Beyond the Down Low: Sex, Lies, and Denial in Black America
Keith Boykin
The “down low”- a term used to describe black men who have sex with other men, but consider themselves heterosexual – has garnered a lot of media attention recently. This book details how society has helped to create an environment where black gay and bisexual men feel compelled to lead double lives. It also addresses the gender and sexual discourse within the black community and considers the phenomena as an example of America's unwillingness to engage in critical but uncomfortable conversations about black sexuality.
2005; $25.00; ISBN 0786714344; Carroll & Graf Publishers.
