New Resources

Embracing Diversity: Educational Resources on Sexual Orientation
This curriculum package is an educational tool dedicated to improving the understanding of sexual orientation, eliminating homophobia, and creating healthy and safe environments where young people can learn and thrive. The curriculum consists of lesson plans for use in high schools that weave an understanding of sexual orientation into general subjects including history, sociology, psychology, health, and science. Some lesson plan topics include: "Bullying and Harassing: A Group Discussion," "Nature versus Nurture: Exploring the Origin(s) of Sexual Orientation," and "Uniqueness and Individuality: Identifying Similarities and Differences." The package also contains a copy of The Shared Heart that has affirming images of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered young people with text that was written by each person about his or her coming out process; a set of 35 mm slides of 20 photographs; a poster for bulletin board display; and a resource and curriculum guide on CD-Rom. In addition, the resource guide lists sexual orientation curricula, support organizations, and related educational resources such as literature, articles, and videotapes.

Streetwise to Sex-wise: Sexuality Education for High-Risk Youth, Second Edition

This skills-based manual is intended for use with high-risk teens. It consists of 11 lessons for young people nine to 13 years of age. Lessons address male and female sexual and reproductive anatomy; puberty; decision-making; birth control; communication skills; HIV/AIDS; safer sex; child sexual abuse; homosexuality; and dating skills. The manual also consists of 14 lessons for older teens 14 to 19 years of age. Topics address male and female sexual and reproductive anatomy; teen pregnancy; birth control; safer sex; HIV/AIDS; date rape and assertiveness skills; child sexual abuse; homosexuality; dating skills; and relationships.

Conferences

Marion County Health Department's 27th Annual Adolescent Sexuality Conference: "Between You and Me-The Power of Communication" is scheduled for April 25-26 at Seaside Civic and Convention Center in Seaside, OR. This conference is for educators, parents, counselors, community members, and others who wish to increase their knowledge and skills in addressing adolescent sexuality issues. The theme of this conference will focus on the importance of making positive connections with youth while staying current with their issues. Workshop topics include "Beyond the Wall: Working with Incarcerated/Hard-to-Reach Youth about Sexuality," "It Really is a Rainbow: Looking at the Spectrum of Gender and Sexual Identity," and "Stealing Adolescent Sexuality and Selling It Back: Media Images of Teens." The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) 34th Annual Conference, Advances in "Sexuality: The Hottest Topics," is scheduled for May 1-5 at the Roney Palace Beach Resort in Miami, FL. This conference will provide continuing education and expertise to its attendees through workshops, brief presentations, and educational demonstrations. Trainings

Teaching about Sexuality and HIV: Principles and Methods for Effective Education is scheduled for July 9-12 at the Dumas Bay Retreat Center in Federal Way, WA. This is a four-day intensive workshop designed for classroom teachers of all levels. Using interactive, fun, and skill-based methods, it will address the most common questions asked when individuals teach sexuality-related topics. Workshop topics include "What Is Comprehensive Sexuality Education?," "The Guiding Principles of Effective Sexuality/HIV Education," "Identifying Programs and Curricula That Work," "Understanding and Dealing with the Politics of Sexuality/HIV Education," and "Different Lenses, Different Visions: Understanding and Counteracting Opposition to Sexuality/HIV Programs." Planned Parenthood Federation of America's Training of Trainers II (TOT II) is scheduled for July 30 to August 2 in San Francisco, CA. This training is designed for experienced trainers who want to further enhance their skills.
