The Harm Reduction Training Institute in New York City is offering Understanding the Transgendered Experience by Samuel Lurie, coordinator of the Vermont AIDS Education & Training Center, on July 21, 2000, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Institute. This workshop will provide an historical and cross-cultural overview of gender and gender variance. It will describe the distinctions between sexual orientation, gender identity, and biological sex. It will give participants the tools to serve and advocate for transgendered people in their own communities by presenting models of existing programs and discussing strategies for developing programs. The Harm Reduction Training Institute in New York City is offering HIV Prevention and Harm Reduction for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Youth by Joyce Hunter, D.S.W., director, Community Liaison Program, HIV Center for Clinical Behavior Studies, on August 21, 2000, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Institute. This training will increase participants' understanding and awareness of the psychosocial issues facing lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth. Registrants will view the video Working It Out: Scenes from the Lives of Lesbian and Gay Youth. Video vignettes teach individuals how to design interventions to reduce high-risk behaviors among lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth. The training will also explore such barriers to HIV prevention such as coming out and substance use. This course will increase participants' skills in working with this population. Registration is $30.
