(Washington, DC) — The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) is proud to endorse the inaugural observance of International Pronouns Day on October 17, 2018.

International Pronouns Day aims to make asking, sharing, and respecting personal pronouns commonplace and maintains that referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity.

“We are thrilled to join over 250 groups across the globe in establishing this annual observance to say, ‘whatever pronouns you use, you deserve to have them honored by all people and in all parts of your life,’” said Kristine Kippins, SIECUS Board Chair.

What started with conversations about creating more welcoming environments for students in American colleges has evolved into an international celebration of acceptance–supported by organizations, universities, and individuals in over a dozen countries.

“By taking the small steps needed to learn the pronouns people identify with, we can make a huge impact in affirming their dignity and self-worth–especially for transgender and gender nonconforming youth,” Kippins said.

On October 17, supporting groups will be participating in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: hosting panel discussions, organizing in-person awareness activities, screening documentaries, and engaging online using the hashtag #PronounsDay.
