Four More Months of Federal Funding

December 12, 2016

Last Friday, the United States Senate joined the House of Representatives in passing another short-term funding bill—known as a continuing resolution (CR)—that extends federal funding through April 28, 2017. This means that final fiscal year (FY) 2017 funding will be determined by the new 115th Congress and the Trump Administration next year.

Among other provisions beyond the scope of sexual health, the four month stop-gap funding bill extends the majority of program funding at current levels, with a 0.19% across-the-board cut (that will largely be implemented after the final funding levels are decided).

Programs that SIECUS and our partners have been monitoring closely, such as the Office of Adolescent Health’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), maintain their current level of funding through April 28, 2017. Similarly, funding for the competitive abstinence-only-until-marriage program remains level for the same period.

This CR sets up at least one more fight for FY 2017 funding. When the stop-gap runs out next spring, Congress will also be considering FY 2018 funding levels.
