Eight New Sex Ed Laws in Six States
New SIECUS report highlights 2016 sexuality education legislative activity in state legislatures
Washington, D.C. – SIECUS is pleased to announce the publication of the 2016 Sex Ed State Legislative Year-End Report: Top Topics and Takeaways.
The 2016 edition of SIECUS’ Sex Ed State Legislative Year-End Report provides an overview of the year’s state legislative activity as well as highlights and analysis of the more common instruction topics and implementation factors included in this year’s legislation. Of the 94 bills introduced in 29 states this year, 61 bills sought to advance the quality of sexuality education, 23 sought to restrict sexuality education, and 10 would have had a neutral impact.
“While we are heartened to see continued advancement of sexuality education legislation in the states, it is disappointing that we must simultaneously combat legislative efforts seeking to perpetuate misinformation or withhold lifesaving and life-affirming information from our nation’s young people,” said Chitra Panjabi, President and CEO.
Ultimately, eight laws, five of which advance the quality of sexuality education, were enacted in six states: Alaska, California, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Virginia.
“Every student, no matter where they live, has the right to high quality comprehensive sexuality education that reflects the reality and needs of their individual lives. We must do more to realize our vision of a sexually healthy nation by providing the information and education our youth need and deserve.”
The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) has served as the national voice for sexuality education, sexual health, and sexual rights for over 50 years.
