SIECUS Statement on the 2016 Election Results
Washington, D.C. — In response to the 2016 election results, Chitra Panjabi, President and CEO of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), issued the following statement:
“The results of last night’s election raise grave concerns for the rights of many in this country that identify as women, immigrants, people of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and people of minority faiths.
If we are to take President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect Pence at their word, then we must be prepared to see an onslaught of attacks against sexual and reproductive education and health care impacting those most vulnerable and at the margins of our society. The makeup of the House and the Senate will also impede the path to justice for our communities.
SIECUS is prepared to stand and fight to ensure that every person can fully express themselves and love without fear, receive the information and education they need to live healthy lives, and access the full range of sexual and reproductive health care safely, with dignity and respect.”
The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) has served as the national voice for sexuality education, sexual health, and sexual rights for over 50 years. SIECUS affirms that sexuality is a fundamental part of being human, one that is worthy of dignity and respect. We advocate for the right of all people to accurate information, comprehensive education about sexuality, and full spectrum sexual and reproductive health services. SIECUS works to create a world that ensures social justice is inclusive of sexual and reproductive rights.
