SIECUS Reviews Three New Fear-Based Curricula

SIECUS has recently reviewed three fear-based abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula as part of our ongoing Community Action Project.

Reasonable Reasons to Wait: Keys to Character is an abstinence-only-until-marriage curriculum developed under the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA). It was written by Maureen Gallagher Duran and released by the Virginia-based organization, A Choice in Education. The edition SIECUS reviewed was revised in 2002–2003. It is our understanding that the curriculum has not been further revised and that it is no longer available for purchase. SIECUS chose to review this curriculum despite this fact, however, because it was part of a research study that is being touted by the abstinence-only-until-marriage industry as proof of the success of this restrictive approach...  (Click here to read the full review or Here for a summary)

Healthy Image of Sex (HIS) is an abstinence-only-until-marriage curriculum for high school students, which is used in federally funded programs throughout the state of South Carolina. The authors created two versions: Version I for African American audiences and Version II for “ethnically diverse” audiences.  SIECUS reviewed both versions and found surprisingly few differences: pictures vary and some minimal changes have been made to the text but for the most part the two versions are the same... A.C. Green’s Game Plan is a fear- and shame-based abstinence-only-until-marriage program for students in grades 7 through 10. A.C. Green is a professional basketball player who publicly announced his intentions to remain abstinent until marriage and became a nationally recognized speaker on this topic.
